Hi! as the wood chisel carves is a new feature I hope to update daily or weekly about sign making or wood working in general.

CNC VS Hand carved signs or the combining of two methods

What is the difference between a CNC carved sign and a hand carved sign?
There are many, A hand carved sign is something which is completely rendered by the artist hand while a CNC sign is almost completely rendered and carved by a machine. My signs are a combination of both. I grew up a sculptor and the urge to sculpt has never left me. Some of the ways that I get to a final sign have changed however. Instead of meticulously and diligently hand carving lettering with a wood chisel, I now layout the text fonts and lettering in a computer and a high powered router and vee bit quickly and efficiently routs out the lettering in minutes. This job used to take hours and hours of work to accomplish and the arthritis in my hands are a testament to this tedious work. But people get a lot of wrong ideas about CNC which are just plain wrong. A CNC machine will never be an artist and it is as smart and dumb or only as creative as the man who is behind it. I still spend hours designing custom font letters and a lot of time this is still done with a pencil and a piece of paper. The end result is scanned into the computer, vectorized and and then finally machined the resultant lettering still has to be hand sanded and then finished and sealed.

The same process goes for three dimensional hand carved scenes and flourishes. At one time I would draw a picture on the wood sign base and then carefully hand carve it out and finish the sculpture-sign with chisels rasps and sandpaper. The only problems with this technique is that you had to execute the sculpture almost perfectly the first time as there was no way of restoring wood if a mistake was made. The new CNC method can be accomplished in many ways. The first method involves sculpting in a CAD (computer aided design) program where the objects in your three dimensional scene are rendered and sculpted electronically and then machined by means of CAM (computer aided machining or manufacturing) by CNC (computer numerical control) mistakes can be corrected before machining by electronic means. Another way to sculpt by this method is to sculpt in oil based clay. The clay is shaped and finished and then the completed sculpture for the sign is scanned by a structured light 3D scanner. The clay method is an add or subtract form of sculpting so mistakes can be corrected at the clay stage or once the model has been digitized and in the CAD program. Once the 3D model has been digitized it can be scaled to any size the artist needs for the carved wooden or HDU sign. As you can see these advancements in technology make not only the execution of a fine work of carved signage faster and easier, it can also improve quality when used by the right sign maker-artist
